The latest series of HOB experiments are using X-band for observations on the Hobart12-Hobart26 baseline. To get the best sensitivity we are using the DBBC for Hobart26, rather than the mark4 rack. We use the S/X receiver on the 26m.

Hobart12m

Drudg the experiment file as normal, but please note that you will need to run setupxx rather than setupsx. Only 8 IFs are being monitored in caltsys (BBCs 1-8, but both USB and LSB channels) and the autocorrelations will appear differently (with the second 8 channels having reversed shapes to the first 8).

Hobart26m

The Hobart26m uses the DBBC backend for these experiments rather than the mk5 rack. Unfortunately, the FS only supports controlling one “rack” at a time, so you need to edit configuration files and restart the FS to swap between the backends. There are some instructions included below.

  • DO NOT RUN SLOGIT! This script assumes that you are using the mark4 backend and will create an unusable proc file! Instead, run drudg directly. As oper@hobart
    1. cd /usr2/sched/
    2. scp oper@pcfshb:/usr2/sched/hob006.skd /usr2/sched/
    3. drudg hob006.skd
    4. Check equipment with option 11 - it should be set to DBBC and Mark5B for the rack and recorder.
    5. Return to the main menu and produce a proc file with 12 and snap file with 3
    6. Copy a previous experiments proc file across to current experiment (these are fairly heavily customised at the moment) with cp /usr2/proc/hob005ho.prc /usr2/proc/hob006ho.prc
  • On hobart, terminate the FS and then run the following commands:
    1. cp /usr2/control/mk5ad.mk5ho.ctl /usr2/control/mk5ad.ctl
    2. cp /usr2/control/equip.dbbc2.1gbps.ctl /usr2/control/equip.ctl
  • Restart the FS with fs and then check that the correct mark5 is selected with
    1. mk5=dot? - this should return a “normal” response, as for the AuScope antennas.
  • Load the hob006 procedure as per normal and make sure that there are no errors reported by the FS after running setupxx.
