Handover notes

Please use this page to write up any notes on anything that needs to be passed on to the next observer or should go into the end of experiment message.

Notes should be placed below the horizontal line as a new blog entry.

Continuing problems should be copied to the Current Issues page.

**Template for Handover notes:**

Be sure to add any specific notes about the experiment if required, for example “Special back end configuration for x reason”. Put as much detail as you can - the more the better.

It is ESSENTIAL to put your name after EVERY entry. Copy and paste the template into the new handover notes

   * 1300UT Experiment started okay (JMc).

Format for entering a comment It is important to stick to this formula - there is a good reason we need this information, so please include it!

Time stamp in UT * Comment * (Your Name)

For Example:

20:00UT: Wind stows, Missed scans 012-3456 to 012-3457 (Jim)

20:50UT: Mark5 lost connection, had to restart Mark5 and reconfigure DBBC, called Jamie on call to fix, missed scans 012-3456 to 012-4567 (Jim)

Again - as much detail as you can. It is important to remember that these notes will be sent to the correlator, so please make sure they make sense to others.

  • 18:00UT Exp started OK. First source was 0834-201. Antenna checks and fringe check not done, due to time constraints.
  • 00:27UT Wind stow. 23:39-00:07. (Lucia)
  • 00:40UT Wind stow. Antenna changes frequently between stowing and operating now. Need to extract all stowing times using Arwin's script once the experiment has finished. (Lucia)

  • 18:00 UT Exp started OK. First source 0834-201. Antenna checks and fringe check not done, due to time constraints.
  • 07:35 UT Noticed that the met sensor is stuck - has been reporting the same value on weather checks since experiment start. Called Jamie - fixing in 30 mins. Unreliable weather data prior to fix (Bryn) (note: correct weather data is from 11:23 UT onward! -Tiege)
  • 15:00 UT Attempted to switch module in between scans, unfortunately the new module was in read only mode (error: error m5 -900 bank is write protected) , called Jamie, he was able to fix it using “mk5=protect=off” and “mk5=reset=erase”. BEWARE: If you are looking back at these handover notes after getting the same problem, I am assuming “mk5=reset=erase” fully wipes the disk, make sure the disk is empty (not that this is likely to occur if the disk already has data written onto it) before going ahead. First scan on new module is 033-1521, however, only latter part of scan is valid. Missed scans are 033-1503 to 033-1517 inclusive. (Tiege)

Note keep an eye on the disk here, summary file states the experiment needs 4005.7 GB, disk its recording on to is 4000 GB, because the total amount recorded is always behind by >5.7 GB at the end of an experiment, I kept it on this disk.

Observer: Arwin

Summary

  • The signal observed was very strong and the peak was very wide (see figure below, normally we center the peak at 800 mhz and set the span to 20 mhz, this time I needed 100 mhz). I was worried that the signal might be saturating and unable to get in touch with Jim, we tried changing the variable voltage to see if it has an affect on the signal strenght.
    1. 20:30 - 21:15 UT 14 -rfpic=cross,direct
    2. 21:15 - 21:27 UT 10 -rfpic=cross,direct
    3. 21:27 - 21:35 UT 20 -rfpic=cross,direct
  • Unable to see any change in the signal strength on the spectrum analyser, we tried to change the modes
    1. 21:40 - 21:42 UT 20V? -rfpic=cross,cross
    2. 21:42 - 21:46 UT 20V? -rfpic=direct,direct
    3. 2146 onwards 20V? -rfpic=cross,direct
