Handover notes

Please use this page to write up any notes on anything that needs to be passed on to the next observer or should go into the end of experiment message.

Notes should be placed below the horizontal line as a new blog entry.

Continuing problems should be copied to the Current Issues page.

**Template for Handover notes:**

Be sure to add any specific notes about the experiment if required, for example “Special back end configuration for x reason”. Put as much detail as you can - the more the better.

It is ESSENTIAL to put your name after EVERY entry. Copy and paste the template into the new handover notes

   * 1300UT Experiment started okay (JMc).

Format for entering a comment It is important to stick to this formula - there is a good reason we need this information, so please include it!

Time stamp in UT * Comment * (Your Name)

For Example:

20:00UT: Wind stows, Missed scans 012-3456 to 012-3457 (Jim)

20:50UT: Mark5 lost connection, had to restart Mark5 and reconfigure DBBC, called Jamie on call to fix, missed scans 012-3456 to 012-4567 (Jim)

Again - as much detail as you can. It is important to remember that these notes will be sent to the correlator, so please make sure they make sense to others.

Note to observers: Aircon in Auscope control room appears to be out of water or something. If you turn it on, it smells bad and doesn't really heat up the room.

  • Exp started OK.
  • He supply press ~275 psi. Informing Brett.
  • 5:15UTC - He was supplied, bringing pressure from 265 to 300 psi (Liza).
  • Signs of RFI in channels S5, S6 (overflow) pretty much all the time (Liza)
  • Racbus lost connection with newsmerd 2 times, the pcal control had to be returned to fs manually (calu…) Caused overflow of all VCs (Liza)
  • 11:45 He supply pressure ~278 psi. Dropping at this rate it should be below 275 psi in about an hour or two. Liza will contact Brett and he will make decision (Anita)
  • A little after 14:00 UT Brett re-filled the He-supply, now is about 298 psi. (Ellen)

  • 18:30 UT - Experiment started ok. (Ellen)
  • 22:05 UT - First noticed that tsys values were all around 200 or higher (except channel 11). This stayed the case for multiple scans. Called the station and there was no reply. Called Warren, suggested that the weather might be to blame; there is a lot of rain, so maybe a storm is affecting things. (Ellen)
  • 22:42 UT - Tsys values returned to reasonable levels. (Ellen)
  • 00:15UT - lost connection with the pcfs. The DBBC also lost connection with the fs and the Mark 5 lost sync. Reconfigured the DBBC and resynced the Mark 5 and DBBC with 'fmset'. Missed scan 212-0002 (Imogen)
  • 01:01UT - antenna got stuck, reset drives, missed scan 212-1030a (Imogen)

Re the issue raised by Dave in the latest meeting: When the Handover notes are copy'n'pasted in End of Experiment window, they are truncated in the actual log file, so they don't make it to the end of experiment checklist. (Ellen)

  • 1803UT onsource and tracking (JS)
  • 1804UT Accidentally issued `mk5=bank_set=inc` whilst recording (?) (JS)

  • ~1850UT After trying to nut out issues with Warren, drove out to MtP manually reset mkv (JS)
  • 1901UT Schedule resumed missed scans (JS)
  • 1907UT No data recorded! (JS)
  • 1911UT Manually set disk_record=on, fixed the issue (JS)

  • 16:57UT - Jim Palfreyman's Vela observing started automatically at 16:57UT, slewing to Vela 15 minutes later. Affected scans: 208-1720, 208-1730

  • 17:30UT - Missed first scans due to field system terminal requiring password, first scan 208-1730 (Ross)
  • 20:18UT - Recording for first scan has not stopped, other scans may have been tracked and recorded. Field system restarted but contact could not be re-established after several reboots (Ross).
  • 21:47UT - Connection to pcfske established but schedule could not be restarted, date set at 2007 (Ross).
  • 22:40UT-23:20UT - pcfs running fine, fs running, fmset shows all times aligned. However ps log window shows times 08:10 or so. Antenna trips (antenna slewing, antenna stuck) when trying to slew to the source. Rebooted pcfs (Liza)
  • 23:25UT - pcfske set up to observe, with 208-2328 being first recorded scan. Also may be useful previous scans: 208-1730, first 2GB (Liza)
  • After each scan recorded pcfs fs log window shows prompt for password:
    23:48:21#antcn#TR $$/208.23:48:21.11 90.1994 53.2181 0.0001 -0.0002

    Password:

If any key is not pressed, all subsequent activity of fs is locked. (Liza)

  • 00:10UT - Culprit is identified as weather command in midob. GA weather station seems to be changed in some way and asking for password. Disabled wht command in midobs for now. No weather information since beginning of experiment. (Liza)
  • Repeatedly antenna tracking outside of tolerance (23:20 onwards):
#antcn#Antenna outside nominal tracking tolerance of 0.0045 degrees, current tolerance 0.0100.
  • 01:55UTC - wth recording re-enabled following implementation of the new security measures at the station (by Jamie) (Liza)
  • S-band Tsys are high (105-155K)

  • 17:00 UT – started OK (Liza)
  • 23:10 UT – power levels in if3 adjusted. VCs look happier now (Lucia).
  • 05:00 UT – vacuum pressure has been increasing over the last two (03 UT - 05 UT )hours. Now reset the vacuum pump and it is under 3.5 again. Receiver still warm. Possibly bad scans from 202-0303 ongoing due to warm receiver (up to 140K). (Lucia)

  • 12:05 UT – Still windstowed (JS)
  • 13:50 UT – Still windstowed (JS)
  • 14:01 UT – Not windstowed! Missed scans 202-1118a to 202-1359a (JS)

  • 17:00 UT – experiment started OK not without fight with dbbc: the huge formatter-to-GPS clock difference (1E-1) forced to restart and reconfigure DBBC software before observation started (liza)
  • 04:28 UT – fs restarted. Fs has died when extracting a whole lot of data from Monica. Missed scans 202-0408 through 202-0430. 202-0436 should be fine again. Recording was running when fs stopped working; so disk pos now 15 GB ahead. (Lucia)
